Healthcare Trends in 2024

Key points: Healthcare’s interest in generative AI will continue in 2024. Also, consumers are becoming more accustomed to digital-enabled conveniences that help them organize or manage their health data.

The end of 2023 is looming, and it’s time to get out the crystal ball and share some thoughts on what to expect for healthcare in 2024.

Here are two predictions that might be impactful trends in 2024: AI and how people are organizing and managing their health data using new technologies.

Generative AI rocked the healthcare scene a year ago with the massive popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which uses large language models. Most AI experts believe the technology has endless applications in healthcare, and some leading health systems have developed definitive strategies for the emerging technology.

“Although slower than some other industries, healthcare’s interest in generative AI is astonishing given that it has not even been one year since the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI. The pace of innovation inside and outside of healthcare in this past year has also been astounding.”

An important issue of healthcare’s adoption of generative AI is a lack of regulatory guidance or standardization designed to protect both patient safety and provider liability risk. President Biden’s Executive Order in October to regulate AI is an obvious hint that 2024 will include some sort of federal guidelines and/or legislation.

Considering the uncertainty around regulation, health systems will have to be thoughtful about how they comply. That means provider organizations may have to essentially regulate their own AI algorithms. AI will definitely play a big role in 2024.

The healthcare landscape is undergoing a huge transformation driven by the growing emphasis on patient engagement and empowerment.

A recent survey by Deloitte suggests that financial pressures on consumers will impact their strategy in the coming year. Consumers are becoming more accustomed to digital-enabled conveniences and would prioritize a provider who can relate and understand their personal needs.

The healthcare leaders who can deliver on these demands will be rewarded with consumer loyalty and expanded market share.

One of the things that people like to do by the end of the year is organize or manage their health data. Nearly half of Americans struggle to take their medications as prescribed. Medication reminder apps can be a game-changer for anyone trying to manage their health using medications.

Consistency is the key to effective medication management, and these apps are here to help achieve just that.

Apple announced in June 2023 new health features in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10, expanding into two impactful areas and providing innovative tools and experiences across platforms. New mental health features allow users to log their momentary emotions and daily moods.

Whatever system equips people with the information they need to make informed decisions, it can only help improve outcomes and reduce the cost of care.
